“It’s a Big World In There”
The Women’s Studio Workshop is pleased to announce “It’s a Big World in There”, a collaborative exhibition between sculptor and costumer Kate Hamilton, stop-motion video artist Tona Wilson, and composer and sound artist Jonathan Elliott. The experimental installation transformed Cottekill’s C H R C H Project Space into an immersive and interactive multimedia environment through which viewers can move and explore.
The installation is the culmination of Hamilton’s four weeks as an artist-in-residence at the Women’s Studio Workshop. Working out of the C H R C H Project Space during the month of July, Hamilton is developing new sculptural work and experimenting with rigging, light, and sound through her collaboration with Wilson and Elliott. A sculptor known for creating room-sized garments, Hamilton is using translucent sailcloth to create ethereal and architectural pieces that hang down the full height of Cottekill’s one-room church-turned-art-space. Emphasizing “serious play and experimentation”, Wilson and Elliott are creating projections and sound, respectively, that will interact with Hamilton’s haunting sculptures to create layered, ethereal fields of light, sound, and space.
“It’s a Big World In There” will be presented one night only, on Saturday, July 26, 2014 4-7pm at C H R C H Project Space in Cottekill. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served. Hamilton is holding open studio hours on two Sundays (July 13 and July 20) from 10am-2pm, for those interested in previewing the project.
Hamilton is a sculptor, costumer, and designer who works in the mid-Hudson Valley and New York City. Her practice explores the architectural details and the experience of clothing through pieces ranging in scale from human- to room-sized. Hamilton’s ephemeral sculptural work has been shown around the US, and her costuming has appeared in art performances, operas, and theatre in New York, Berlin, and Zurich. www.katehamiltonstudio.com
